Leptospirosis
In light of recent visits and consults with Veterinary Specialty Center, we wanted to inform you that the disease Leptospirosis is now reaching the western states.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be found in most animals including livestock (cattle, pigs and sheep) and wildlife (deer, opossums, skunks, raccoons, rats and other rodents). The bacteria are passed via the urine into water sources where they reside and reproduce.

Your dog can become infested with Leptospirosis by drinking, swimming in or walking through contaminated water. Bacteria can enter through a cut in the skin or through the mucous membranes (such as eyes, nose or mouth). Humans can also contract Leptospirosis. While the disease is rarely fatal in humans it can cause severe illness. Cats appear to have a natural resistance to Leptospirosis.

Look for the following signs that could indicate your dog has been infected with Leptospirosis: Flu-like symptoms are most common (fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weakness, depression, or lethargy), and/or jaundice (marked by a yellow cast in the gums of the mouth and whites of the eyes). In most severe cases, the disease can lead to kidney or liver failure and may be fatal.

The most complete Leptospirosis protection is with vaccines containing the most common strains. There are other strains without vaccine availability so there is still that risk. Currently we have the vaccine available to those who elect to protect their dog against Leptospirosis. It is a two-shot series given 3 weeks apart. Each injection costs $20 and may be just a visit with our nurses provided we have seen your dog within the last 12 months, otherwise the visit will be with the veterinarian for the wellness exam with necessary vaccinations.

Please call our office at 638-6363 to set up an appointment (or request an appointment online) or if you have further questions.

IVet Foods
We are pleased to announce the addition of iVet Professional Formula diets for your juvenile, adult or senior dogs and cats as an extension of our hospital’s Health Maintenance Services. iVet offers a high quality food at a very competitive price. We are so sure that you will be pleased with this healthy alternative we will give you the first bag absolutely FREE to give it a try! Please stop by the hospital at your earliest convenience to learn more.

These healthy gourmet foods are developed with veterinarians in order to deliver quality nutrition. IVet foods utilize high quality protein and carbohydrate sources to support a healthy digestive process. These formulas do not contain meat/poultry by products, which may be less digestible than whole meat sources. With increased digestibility your pet will have less flatulence and fecal production. IVet diets include whole grains like rice, oatmeal and barley, which are better carbohydrate choices to eliminate possible allergic reactions. There is no wheat, corn or soy in these diets like most other diets that do cause allergic reactions. There are no artificial colors or preservatives. IVet foods also include high levels of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. Enhanced levels of antioxidants help with immune system defense.

Diets offered are canine puppy (large breed and small breed), adult chicken and rice, energy formula (for active dogs, breeding females, hunting dogs and underweight dogs), maintenance, reduced fat and senior formula. For your feline companion, there is kitten formula, adult chicken and rice and reduced fat. Bag sizes for canine diet come in 8 lbs, 18 lbs or 37.5 lbs. For Feline bag sizes are 3.5 lbs and 17.5 lbs. Costs are less than your higher quality diets such as Iams, Science Diet/Hills, Eukanuba or Pro Plan.
